[Day 4] The rest of the Fridge: Kitchen Clutter Clear Out

It’s day 4 and time to finish clearing the fridge clutter.

My fridge isn’t jam packed at this time but it still looks rather unpleasant.  I’m a bit embarrassed to show you this photo.  As you can see, perfection isn’t a priority in my house:)

If you don’t have much time to clear out your entire fridge, then break the project into sections.  Work on 1 shelf, or 1 drawer and then move onto another area ASAP.

  • Fill the sink with soapy water and grab some dry rags.
  • Empty a drawer or shelf and wash it down.
  • Toss or compost food that is no longer usable.  (my cabbage looks sort of bad; I promise to use it soon)
  • Categorize food: leftovers (these should be front and center so you don’t forget about them), beverages, meat, veggies, fruit, snacks, etc.   Store food in these categories.  Designate a shelf or drawer for each category if possible.
  • Return the food to the fridge.  It will be a treat to open your clean and organized fridge.  Now you can find what you are looking for….. SWEET!
  • Repeat this same process for the freezer.
  • Clear out clutter before you grocery shop and you will maintain a fairly clutter-free fridge.

This is the result of spending 20 minutes clearing out my fridge shelves.  I found items that fit into the crisper drawers, composted the old lettuce that was in the huge lettuce keeper, categorized items, and tossed 3 other items.  Keep in mind that we have 2 people that live at home (our daughter is away at college), I do my main shopping once a week, and we eat very little processed food.  The drawers are chock full of apples, cauliflower, cheese, and cabbage.  My husband and I eat out an average of 2 times per month.

Now it’s your turn.  Organizing your fridge will make a huge difference.   Please post photos or comments below.  I would love to hear from you.

Simply,

Jill
