Start Organizing Your Life

My name is Jill and I’m addicted to jigsaw puzzles.

What else am I going to do during the unbearably long Wisconsin winters?

Organizing is a lot like doing a jigsaw puzzle.

The first and hardest step is to START.

You bet I feel intimidated when I open a new puzzle box.  How am I going to put that a thousand pieces together?  At that moment I’m wishing someone else would start it for me. Unfortunately my husband has no interest in helping me.

I want the puzzle put together so I START looking for edge pieces.

Instead of  working on the entire puzzle, I focus on the edge which is a small percentage of the pieces.

An organizing project also needs a starting point and a focus.  It’s more important to start than wasting time fretting about where to start.

After the edge is as complete, minus the edge pieces I have yet to locate, I move onto the next step.  Sorting out pieces for another area.  I usually work on the sky or water.  That’s my system, breaking the entire puzzle into smaller projects in order to avoid feeling overwhelmed.

Use this system to help you start organizing.

Determine where you will start.  For example, your office.

Focus on one small area. For example, one desk drawer or the top corner of your desk.

Continue sorting out the mess, one small area at a time until the puzzle is complete and you feel awesome!

It may take a few weeks or longer.  Don’t give up until you complete the big picture.

Where are you going to start organizing?
