When Cute Becomes Clutter

Clients will tell me they don’t need a particular item yet they have the hardest time letting it go because it’s soooo cute!

The cuteness factor probably enticed you buy things that eventually became cute clutter.

An organizing colleague, Jamie Novak, uses the acronym (C.U.T.E.) Can’t Use This Ever to describe cute things. When I share this with clients it usually elicits a laugh.

Do you have cute clutter?

Before buying the next cute object, stop and think about its usefulness and where you will place it in your home.

I get it, cute items are fun and some of theses objects are well loved and have a designated place in your home. They make you smile and feel good when you look at them.

I’m more concerned about the cute things that fill every nook and cranny thus preventing you from using a space as it was intended or the cute objects that are still in their original shopping bags months after their purchase.

Cute stuff are commonly given as gifts. Does your friend or relative want it or need it? An alternate gift, that won’t become cute clutter, could be a consumable item or a gift card.

Stop buying cute objects altogether, especially if you strive to be more environmentally conscience. This won’t be easy because cute tends to be cheap, the double whammy of influence. Consider all the resources used to create cuteness, even if it only costs you a dollar. The waste and dollars spent add up over time. Save your money, reduce clutter and protect the environment; place a long term hold on purchasing cute objects.
