[Day 7] Coffee Mugs: Kitchen Clutter Clear Out

Day 7 is a great day to focus is on our coffee/tea mugs.

We all have too many mugs, am I right?  I don’t even drink coffee and I just acquired a taste for tea; as long as it contains some cream and maple syrup.

So why do I have 2 shelves of mugs?  I have a few excuses reasons. Our daughter made a bunch in her ceramics class and then we have the mugs we have kept just in case we have 30 people over and they all want coffee—hasn’t happened and it’s never going to happen.   Did I mention the sentimental mugs that have photos of our daughter on them?

There are only 2-3 people living in our house, it’s time to let some of them go.

Follow these steps to clear out and organize your mugs.

  • Remove all the mugs from your cabinets.
  • Check your sink and dishwasher for dirty mugs.
  • Evaluate every single mug.
  • You probably prefer certain mugs and use them repeatedly. Your family members also have their favorites.  The least favorites are usually at the back of the cabinet and a bit dusty.
  • How bad would it be if you donated or re-purposed half of those mugs you rarely use?  Think of the space you could reclaim!
  • Do you need a mug to commemorate every place you have visited?
  • Re-shelve the mugs you decided to keep.  If possible, store your mugs near your coffee maker, or your microwave/stove if you drink tea. Another logical place to store them is above the dishwasher.
  • Add another layer of storage, if your cabinet shelves are not adjustable, with a helper shelf or an under the shelf basket.
  • Extra mugs may be used as pencil cups.  Re-purpose sentimental mugs and use them in your bathrooms (makeup brushes, lipstick, q-tips) and craft room (tools, markers).

This is my favorite mug. I adore it’s shape and the handle fits my hand perfectly; it’s staying.P1030764_resize_resize
